This is my interview with Tawanda and Luke about Thriller Films and the interview was extremely helpful as I found out many aspects of what audiences around the age of 15+ (our age limit for our Thriller opening) want to see in a Thriller opening and this encouraged me to add the ideas of what I were told to our Thriller Opening to make it as great as possible.

      Questionnaire (Thriller movies)

I used survey monkey to create a questionnaire to get an idea of what people expect in a Thriller movies and in the opening of a Thriller film. 

I had 12 respondents who took part in my questionnaire.

Results of Questionnaire

1) What is your gender?

From this analysis i can see that more females were interested in thrillers compared to men however there were also an advanced interest from men at 41.67%

                                                                                            

2) How old are you?

It shows that my target audience is mainly between 15-19 as that makes up to 83% of the participants who took part in the questionnaire. This implies that this age is my main audience which my thriller should be aimed at and targeted to.

3) Do you enjoy watching movies that are associated with the Thriller genre?

From this analysis i can see that most people enjoy watching movies that are associated with the Thriller genre as 91.67% enjoys watching thrillers. 

Most say that they are exciting and don't get boring.

However there is a small minority who do not like movies associated with Thriller genre at 8.33%.



4) What are your favourite types of Thriller?
There were different types of sub genres people were associated with as  25% thoroughly enjoyed Crime but on the other hand 25% really were fascinated with Romantic. Additionally 33.33% liked Action associated with Thriller. This gives me an idea of a target genre with many people associating themselves with specific sub genres. Furthermore, from my questionnaire i know that very limited people enjoy Supernatural Thrillers as nobody chose for that Sub genre as their favourite.  

5) What makes a good Thriller?
There were a different range of aspects that people wanted, to make a good thriller film. Firstly, most people highly recommended an interesting narrative as 38.46% chose that as they believed an interesting narrative would make a great thriller film and this gives me the idea to make the opening very interesting meaning to engage the audience in and keep their eyes fixated on the screen when watching. Additionally many people wanted interesting characters to make a good Thriller with 23.08%. The quality of filming also was an important factor of making a good trailer due to the specific shots that make the film entertaining for the audience and have a big effect on the film. In addition, people wanted violence with 7.69%.


6) How much of the plot do you think should be released in the opening sequence of a Thriller?
From the questionnaire I can't entail that from the opening of the film people would wan to know as little as possible as 75% of the people said that because they want to find out more and more as the film progresses. This helps me when actually filming the opening of the Thriller not to reveal too much but to engage the audience in. On the other hand there in a minority who would want to understand the whole plot at 8.33%.


7) What would you like to be included in an opening sequence of a Thriller film to make you watch it and be engaged to continue watching the whole film?
Many people said they would want suspense with 41.67% to keep them on the edge of their seats. Many additionally said they would also want horror with 33.33% also keeping them on the edge of their seats and this encourages me to have ideas of how the group and I can keep the audience intrigued from the very beginning of the Thriller opening. Some also stated they would want action with 16.67% saying this.



The questionnaire was very successful and I found out a lot of information about the viewers needs. This has helped me to add important elements into our opening to the Thriller film. Looking at the results we can see that everyone that completed the survey liked thriller films and most of the people liked the suspense build up of a thriller so this is something that we should really include in our thriller opening.

Audience Research: FDA (Zak Green)

The FDA explores which thrillers are on release, those which have already been released and those which are due to be released. It also tells you the success of the film, along with audience figures and the films age rating.

  Violence

. There is allowed to be slight amounts of violence however it must not show any form of them in any great detail. only depending on the situation is there allowed to be hints of gory moment but with no sign of blood or injury.

 Sex

. Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Moderate sex references are permitted, but frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable. 

 Nudity

. There may be nudity, but in a sexual context it must be brief and discreet.

 Agression 

. Agressive discrimination is very likely to not be tolerated however it may be used at a very toned down level. 

  Drugs

. The misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or give instructional detail.      

Discrimination

Discriminatory language or behaviour must mot be endorsed by the work as a whole. Aggressive discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly condemned.

                                      

Language

. There may be strong language. Very strong language may be permitted, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency within the work as a whole and any special contextual justification. 

Sex

. Sexual activity is allowed to be portrayed, but usually without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity

. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. There may be nudity in a sexual context but usually without strong detail.

Threat

. There may be strong threat and horror. A sustained focus on sadistic or sexual threat is unlikely to be acceptable.

Drugs 

. Drug taking is allowed to be shown but the work as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances is unlikely to be acceptable.

Discrimination

. The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour, although there may be racist, homophobic or other discriminatory themes and language.

                                            

Sex

If the film is age rating of 18 then you can expect there to be scenes of a sexual nature which tries to inform the viewer with use of some explicit pictures.

Violence

. The violence in a 18 rated film also takes a step up, there will be scenes in the film where there are high amounts of blood and injury.

Drugs

. Drugs may be also shown freely with detail and concentration been shown. An example of a 18 rated film would be Paranormal activity 4.

For our thriller opening that we are going to be making it is very important that we know what we cam and can't do when filming, our age will be 15+ as the years below is a little harder to convey a good thriller with all the aspects needed eliminated any limitations that could come across.

What does IMDB show us?

IMDB shows us customers thoughts on particular movies and what they liked and didn't like. We could use this program to read customer thoughts on thriller movies and see what they liked and then try to include something similar in our thriller opening.

By having the film shown during a holiday, more people are able to see the film and gain many more customers than they would usually on school days.

Film Listings shown in – Dunfermline:

The film is shown during the holiday which has the effects of increasing audiences. Also, the film attracts younger audiences than older audiences which also increases viewing figures.

Film listings shown in – Leeds-Bradford:

This film is shown during the week days during the holiday, the film attracts younger audiences and so it increases viewing figures.

What does this show us?

The film listings shows us what times the films are shown and also in addition if there are many film listings for a particular film, this shows us that this film such as Spectre is a popular film and that many people will watch it.

The Conjuring (2013) Opening Title Sequence Analysis

For this task we were asked to watch a thriller opening on the website 'Art of the title' and the movie i chose was 'The Conjuring (2013). I had to create a timeline which included the audio and text. In total there were 16 texts shown in the 2 minutes opening of the film. The reasons for this many text in the opening of the movie was to show the viewers:
