Our Thriller Opening Idea Presentation (Group Post)

Individual Pitch Ideas (Group Post)

My Idea For Thriller Opening

Characters:

2 Teens
One Man Holding A Knife

Plot

The opening will start with a teen sleeping alone in his bedroom. (He lives in the same house as his mate who is in another room)

It is in the middle of the night and the house is completely silent.

He then hears a glass smash downstairs and wakes up suddenly. He thinks that he is just imagining it so  goes back to sleep thinking nothing of it. Shortly later he hears the same sound and wakes up again.

He then shouts "Jack!" (his mate to see if he has heard the same sound) but there is no response.

He grabs a knife and torch from inside the drawer in his room.

He decides to go and have a look to see where it is coming from.

As he opens the door in his bedroom the creaking noise from the door will be exageratted so it builds up the suspense.

He tries to walk down the stairs as slowly as he can to reduce the sound of the creaking from the stairs but each time he steps on a stair there is a load squeaky sound.

Eventually he reaches downstairs and walks slowly and quietly to the front room. Just before he opens the door there will be a close up shot on the teens facial expressions because he will be looking very nervous he slowly opens the door but it makes a load noise.

He walks in nervously into the room and looks around but there is nothing/no one there. So decides to look in the kitchen. The kitchen door is open, but as he walks closer the door slams shut. He then stands back and calms himself down.

He then walks into the kitchen and there is Jack getting a drink but he had smashed a glass on the floor by accident, but outside the window just behind him is a man with long hair standing there holding a knife.

As soon as we see the man the screen turns black and dramatic music begins.

Thriller Film Survey (Zak Green)

https://www.surveymonkey.com/analyze/vAN6g_2B9mdaqbWDfPMh_2BXQTObX2bzLvd2DmOJNUkJwx8_3D

Looking at the results of the survey that i recently completed we can see that the majority of the people that completed the survey were between the ages 10-20 (With the majority of them being around 16 years old). I decided to give the survey to people aged around 16 years old because we are aiming to produce a thriller opening which is 15 years rated and we could see what they liked about thriller films and then include it in ours. Looking at the results we can see that everyone that completed the survey liked thriller films and most of the people liked the suspense build up of a thriller so this is something that we should really include in our thriller opening. Also we can see that only a little bit of the plot should be shown in our thriller opening so that is something we need to take a note of. Another thing i found out is that the people who took this survey thought that make up and props are important in a thriller film so we need to make sure that we include props in our opening. We also need to make sure that the plot is good because the people surveyed thought that was a very important factor of a thriller film. Finally we need to include music in our thriller because apparently that helps with the build up of suspense and we want to build up as much suspense as possible to make it enjoyable for the viewers.

Audience Research- Interview (Gavin)

This is my interview with Tawanda and Luke about Thriller Films and the interview was extremely helpful as I found out many aspects of what audiences around the age of 15+ (our age limit for our Thriller opening) want to see in a Thriller opening and this encouraged me to add the ideas of what I were told to our Thriller Opening to make it as great as possible.

Audience Research- Questionnaire/Survey (Gavin Fernandes)

Create your own user feedback survey
      Questionnaire (Thriller movies)

I used survey monkey to create a questionnaire to get an idea of what people expect in a Thriller movies and in the opening of a Thriller film.
I had 12 respondents who took part in my questionnaire.

Results of Questionnaire

1) What is your gender?
From this analysis i can see that more females were interested in thrillers compared to men however there were also an advanced interest from men at 41.67%

2) How old are you?
It shows that my target audience is mainly between 15-19 as that makes up to 83% of the participants who took part in the questionnaire. This implies that this age is my main audience which my thriller should be aimed at and targeted to.

3) Do you enjoy watching movies that are associated with the Thriller genre?
From this analysis i can see that most people enjoy watching movies that are associated with the Thriller genre as 91.67% enjoys watching thrillers.
Most say that they are exciting and don't get boring.
However there is a small minority who do not like movies associated with Thriller genre at 8.33%.

4) What are your favourite types of Thriller?
There were different types of sub genres people were associated with as  25% thoroughly enjoyed Crime but on the other hand 25% really were fascinated with Romantic. Additionally 33.33% liked Action associated with Thriller. This gives me an idea of a target genre with many people associating themselves with specific sub genres. Furthermore, from my questionnaire i know that very limited people enjoy Supernatural Thrillers as nobody chose for that Sub genre as their favourite.

5) What makes a good Thriller?
There were a different range of aspects that people wanted, to make a good thriller film. Firstly, most people highly recommended an interesting narrative as 38.46% chose that as they believed an interesting narrative would make a great thriller film and this gives me the idea to make the opening very interesting meaning to engage the audience in and keep their eyes fixated on the screen when watching. Additionally many people wanted interesting characters to make a good Thriller with 23.08%. The quality of filming also was an important factor of making a good trailer due to the specific shots that make the film entertaining for the audience and have a big effect on the film. In addition, people wanted violence with 7.69%.

6) How much of the plot do you think should be released in the opening sequence of a Thriller?
From the questionnaire I can't entail that from the opening of the film people would wan to know as little as possible as 75% of the people said that because they want to find out more and more as the film progresses. This helps me when actually filming the opening of the Thriller not to reveal too much but to engage the audience in. On the other hand there in a minority who would want to understand the whole plot at 8.33%.

7) What would you like to be included in an opening sequence of a Thriller film to make you watch it and be engaged to continue watching the whole film?
Many people said they would want suspense with 41.67% to keep them on the edge of their seats. Many additionally said they would also want horror with 33.33% also keeping them on the edge of their seats and this encourages me to have ideas of how the group and I can keep the audience intrigued from the very beginning of the Thriller opening. Some also stated they would want action with 16.67% saying this.

The questionnaire was very successful and I found out a lot of information about the viewers needs. This has helped me to add important elements into our opening to the Thriller film. Looking at the results we can see that everyone that completed the survey liked thriller films and most of the people liked the suspense build up of a thriller so this is something that we should really include in our thriller opening.

Research Title Sequence Analysis Timeline (Gavin Fernandes)

The Conjuring (2013) Opening Title Sequence Analysis

For this task we were asked to watch a thriller opening on the website 'Art of the title' and the movie i chose was 'The Conjuring (2013). I had to create a timeline which included the audio and text. In total there were 16 texts shown in the 2 minutes opening of the film. The reasons for this many text in the opening of the movie was to show the viewers:
. Who the movie was based on
. Director
. Writers
. Producers
. The director of photography
. The Editors
. The production designer
. Who the music was produced by
. The costume designer
. The casting directors

Research Title Sequence Analysis Timeline (Zak Green)

For this task we had to draw a timeline and we had to write down every bit of text that comes up in the opening of a thriller movie. The text includes the directors, producers, cast, screenplay workers etc. We also had to record the different sounds in the opening and in the Captain America Winter Soldier (The film i looked at) the music played in the opening was the same throughout until the very end when the tempo gets much faster.

Analysis Of Opening 3 Minutes Of FlightPlan (Gavin Fernandes)

Additional analysis of the opening FlightPlan

At the start of the opening a repeated shot of a train zooming past a high speed is alternated with a black screen. When the screen is black a basic white font in used to display the credits. The editing of the alternating shots creates the dramatic atmosphere.

The music being played over the the opening of the film creates tension. This is because of the high pitched violin sounds, suggesting that something out of the ordinary may happen. A foley sound is used when the women opens the door and this is used to add emphasis to the action being performed.

The zooming from behind, over the shoulder of the female when she is sitting on the train platform creates the feeling of anxiety and makes the audience think that someone is behind the women, and may be putting her in danger. Furthermore it also makes her appear vulnerable, as she is unaware of what actually is behind her and she is looking in the opposite direction.

There are many questions generated from the opening scenes of FlightPlan which makes it a successful opening. This is because the audience interact with the film and are engaged immediately meaning they will be more likely to continue watching the film to find out the answers to their questions. Some questions generated from the opening of the film are:
. Why is the women sitting at the train station alone?
. Why is the women in a different country?
. Who is the man who leads the women from the train platform?

The use of a flashback in the opening scene is also another way of engaging the viewer as they want to continue watching to acknowledge the relevance of the particular flashback. The impact the flashback has on the audience if that it creates confusion at first but then you get the sense that all will be explained later on in the film. The flashback occurs when the women is sitting thinking in silence on the platform bench. This gives the impression that the flashback is a memory she is now going over in her head. The flashback involves the viewing of a body.

When the train pulls away from the platform, a very effective close up of the vehicle is used along with a sudden loud sound effect which creates fear and startles the viewer.

Miss en scene:

The character appears to be focussing on something at the beginning that is unknown to the audience and we get the impression that it is something negative by her facial expression which is emotionless and the tears convey the character's sadness.
The costume that the blonde lady has is all black which makes her look very serious, and in addition we can tell by her figure expression that she looks like she is remembering something that has happened. This can suggest that this is not going to be a happy film.

The opening is firstly in an empty train station which seems very unusual as train stations are usually busy with people and this makes the audience question immediately. This may later have some significance on the film, it then cuts to a room with a coffin making the audience question who is in it and what has happened.
The opening of the film began with bright lighting in the train station then changing to being really dim in the room with the coffin with only the light shining down on the coffin. This makes the audience focus on the coffin and question who is in it. The dim lighting could suggest sadness and creates mystery into what happened.

The coffin is also in the centre of the frame and it is well lit compared to its surroundings there we pay more attention to this prop. It is symbolic of death and may give us an insight as to why the character from the previous shot was looking upset. The male character located on the left, who we may assume is the undertaker is dressed formally which shows the serious nature of the film.

Camera angle shots and movement:

When the camera is on the man in the coffin there is an aerial shots representing the notion of death. Moreover, this could foreshadow future events that could occur in this film.

The crane shot of the main character cold also illustrate the isolation of the main character which could show that she may have been detached from relationships with the other characters in the film. This also makes her appear vulnerable which suggests that she is a victim throughout the film.

The establishing shot introduces the setting to the audience which shows an empty train station. This is a common setting for films with a thriller genre.

Sounds:

The sound effect in the opening of the film is a connoting mystery which makes the audience feel uneasy. The ambient sound of the crows flapping their wings adds realism as 'background noise' and creates an ominous atmosphere and this is very stereotypical of a thriller film. The undertaker's dialogue 'you need to enter the code now' is in a different language emphasising the seriousness of the situation. Finally the incidental music played occasionally has the effect of creating tension which maintaing audience interest and viewing experience.

Editing:

There is continuity editing which enables the narrative of the film to make sense in chronological order. Some of the cuts use a fade transition. The consistent match on action makes the production appear more convincing to its audience. The use of shot reverse shot shows the reactions of the characters to one another and enhances the audiences experience as we feel more involved in the narrative.

Additional Analysis Of Opening 3 Minutes Of FlightPlan (Zak Green)

Addition Analysis Of Opening 3 Minutes Of FlightPlan

Text.

- Just before the film started the Touchstone pictures logo appeared letting the audience know who the distributor of the film was.

- Also we find out that the company Imagine were involved in the production of the movie. Imagine is a company which has been involved in the production of a number of movies including Robin Hood. Imagine appears in the ripples of the water which is a nice effect.

- As the movie starts we find out that it is a Brian Grazer production.

- Throughout the duration of the start of the movie the names of the main actors in the movie are shown, these include Jodie Forster, Peter Sarsgaard, Sean Bean, Kate Beahan. Etc.

Analysis Of What Happens

The opening of the film takes place at a rather isolated train station. The only person there is Kyle Pratt (Jodie Foster) who is sitting on one of the benches waiting for her fioncee to arrive.

We find out that Kyle isnt waiting for the train when the train arrives and the doors open she doesn't get on.

The atmosphere at the train station is rather quiet, which is the typical atmosphere of a thriller opening.

A few times during the opening 3 minutes of the film the camera zooms in to Kyle's face so we can see how she is feeling by her facial expressions. Most of the time she looks anxious and worried. If the train station was busy and not as quiet than perhaps she wouldn't feel that way.

The only sound you can hear is the trains which are constantly passing by.

When she goes into the room at the train station it is silent the only sound the audience can hear is the sound of her footsteps.
